Prototype is the dynamic solo debut of Video Kid, the alter ego for New Zealand’s Bret McKenzie. Bret is well known for his past work with The Black Seeds and as half of the folk comedy duo Flight of the Conchords whose self titled TV series is currently airing on HBO. It’s also worth mentioning that McKenzie has a cult following from his role as the elf Figwit in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. As for the album, Prototype is a series of warm analog sound waves mixing dub, reggae, electronica and 70′s pop sensibilities. It features guest performances by members of The Black Seeds, New Zealand’s legendary Trinity Roots, Hollie Smith, Twinset and Age Pryor. Tracklisting: Video Kid (4:25) DJz Girlfriend (4:38) Cctv (4:26) Dawnskate (5:31) Runnin (4:15) Runnin Dub (3:36) Crime Scene (4:12) Let Her Go (5:14) Slip Away (3:00).

Delightful electronic-folk sound on this debut from Black Seeds and Flight of The Conchords member Bret McKenzie aka The Video Kid. It’s a sound that’s being explored a bit lately by New Zealand artists, notably Wellington-based ones like Bret, his Black Seed’s co-member Barnaby “Flash Harry” Weir, Age Prior and The Phoenix Foundation as well. Over the nine tracks on ‘Prototype’ (making it more of a mini-LP), Bret exudes a whispy, folk sound in both song writing and vocals, “Dawnskate-88″ is a prime example with the softness of parts (lyrics, singing) of it juxtaposed with some very punchy drum programming and percussion, especially over the last few minutes where thing really begin to roll. The closing track “Slip Away” does break the mould of the rest of the album though, coming off with a very Air sound, all swirling electronic washes and atmospherics. While this is a good collection of songs, no doubt there, a few more tracks and a bit more “oomph” – such as on the multi-tracking on the chorus of “Let Her Go” – would have gone a long way. A great companion piece to Age Pryor’s ‘City Chorus’, the excellent self-titled Flash Harry album, and an intriguing sidestep from both The Black Seeds and Flight of the Conchords sounds. Recommended.
